I am employed temporarily for however long.....

CSU Pueblo Foundation office is keeping me on until they find a database manager, or until I find another job. I work 8-5:00 next week, and told them I could not be in Dec 21-26, while Becky is here. I don't return until January 3, so I will have job search time in there, too. I can use the money - I am really watching my pennies these days. Two weeks' pay will not cover house payment and COBRA insurance, but will really put a dent in it for me. I like the arrangement just fine. I would rather be doing something. I can spend weekends on job search. The daily stuff did not yield anything, anyway.

I heard from District 70 today that they were very glad I interviewed, but they hired someone else. boo hoo! The way I look at it, I had a great experience interviewing and it is still part of the game, and it really is their loss, even if they don't know it. I don't know how to find out if they hired in-house or not. District 60 has not called me for an interview. I will check with them tomorrow.

My plans are to enjoy everyone over the holiday, and rest and quit worrying!!! I hope my new approach really works.

I hope you all have a super Christmas! I will update again if any news develops

Adventures in job search and new work experience

Today is Wed. Decmeber 10. I am working all week (40 hours 8:00-5:00) for CSU Pueblo Foundation Office as a paid temp. It is a learning curve, but I like the people and the office. They only hugh thing that has happened, is the President of the school came in and I did not know who he was. I was embarassed when I found out - won't make that mistake again. It is not a state level job, so if it was offered, I would have to find out about pay and benefits. Some people have left for better jobs through the CSU state structure. I can't find anything out until I am offered a position.

Tuesday evening when I got home, I had a message from District 70 wanting me to interview this morning at 9:30 a.m. I returned the call and left a message at the school that evening, and called this am to make sure I was scheduled. I printed my resume and grabbed my reference letters and was ready to tell Dena, my boss at CSU Pueblo, that I had to leave for an interview in the middle of the morning. I got on mapquest to locate the school which is a long ways! It had me exiting onto McCullough Blvd. -I know where that is. I got to work, Dena did not get in until 8:50, and I immediately told her I had to leave, but would make up the time by not taking my lunch hour, and working the extra time the next three days. She was fine with that.

I headed out to Pueblo West High School for my interview for the Principal's Secretary position. I took McCullough exit, not realizing there were two of them. I had the wrong exit and ended up touring a lot of Pueblo West before I found a street from the map I thought would get me there. Of course, I did not have the phone # to call, nor were there anything but empty streets and houses around me. I finally decided I would do my best and I was only 5 minutes late for the interview. When I was introduced to them I apologized and told them that I was lost, but enjoyed the tour of Pueblo West, and they thought that was pretty funny. It really broke the ice for the interview. I was relaxed and think I did a great job on the interview. Usually they are hiring from within, and I am not sure why I got the interview. I brought up a multitude of good questions and really sold myself. The people were awesome, and the Principal reminded me of Cristal. I hope I have a chance at the job. Don't know when I will have results.

I got back to work at 10:45, so I owe CSU 45 minutes over the next two days. Friday will be my last day here, then I have no idea what is next.

Working is awesome, being around people, meeting new people, forgetting names, and generally visiting with anyone I can. I have been really isolated, so I think I am probably more talkative than usual.

District 60 has not called me for interviews on the 3 temporary grant based positions yet. They usually take a long time to process, so I will try to be patient.

Tony Langoni, Cindy Jobe's Uncle, called me to get him a resume. He has a lead on a job that is not posted yet. I will drop it off at his house after work tonight - who knows. Nice to have the opportunity, anyway.

I am feeling like all of my hard work has paid off. It is about time I get something going!!!!!

That's it for now.

Job prospects improving - Grandbaby Pictures

Logan & Laila at home in SLC in October

Amelia in Nana's back yard at Thanksgiving

Owen in Nana's house

Thanksgiving was fun with Josh, Bree, Owen, Ben, Brenda, Amelia and Shep. We ate good food, watched the antics of the little ones and enjoyed each other's company. I am so thankful for family! We took the kids to Zoo Lights, went to the Nature Center and Raptor Center, took walks, and had a game night. Josh, Bree, and Owen decided to try spending the night so the adults could have some fun after the kids went to bed. I put the kids in bed while Moms and Dads went out to eat and enjoy peace and quiet. It worked well, except Owen listens to a CD before going to sleep, and it skipped. He finally went to sleep late after Mom and Dad got home. I don't think parents got much rest that night, but we had fun staying up late and playing Pictionery. Of course the guys won! It is so nice to be close enough to get together. Ben & Brenda had a harrowing trip home. The 2.5 hour drive took 8 hours! Amelia had a cold, anyway, and it made the long trip much worse. I felt sorry for them all - they had to stop at a Wal Mart to let her run around the store. Much of the time they were stuck in traffic at 1-17 miles an hour and couldn't get off of I-25. We really missed Becky, Devin, Laila and Logan - but at least they are coming on the 20th for Christmas. They had Thanksgiving with a lot of friends, but it felt very strange to me!

Job prospects are better! I had the working interview with Pueblo Bone & Joint. They set up two computers and took us through the patient scheduling procedure. It was great to do something besides answer questions for the second interview. I did not get the job, but all the experience I can get is a help. Today, Express Pro called to set me up with a week-long "working interview" at CSU Foundation. I start Monday at 8:30 and will work a forty-hour week. It will be nice to get out of the house. I have to brush up on MS Access, as they use that data base. I will have a busy weekend preparing for that.

I tested for 2 hours this week for District 70-a secretary at Pueblo West High School. They called on Wed. afternoon for me to go in at 8:30 the following morning. I had forgotten I applied, because that was a few weeks ago. I am expecting an interview based on my test results from what the HR people said. That was unexpected!

District 60 has 3 secretarial jobs open for grant based jobs. I put in for all 3 and should hear next week as well if I get an interview. Most likely the current employees won't want to have a year long temporary job. I would take it gladly. It is a 12 month guarantee, and who knows after that, but most grants go for 3 years or so.

Unemployment turned me down, but at least I tried. I figured that would happen.

I plan on going back to the Methodist Church this week. The people were so nice, and after they dropped off the Pie to me, I can't resist. I hope I find it as pleasant as last time.

My neighbor Marge is quite the character. She had me over for soup one day, so I treated her to her first Starbucks Mocha - I think she is hooked. Coffee is no treat if you have to drink it alone, so I have ulterior motives. I picked her up after Laser eye surgery on Wed. and she gave me a Potica (Italian sweet bread) - I have already polished it off. If you have never had any, you must try it. They sell it all over Pueblo and like the roasted chilis, everyone has a custom version.

That's all I have for now. Miss Ya All!

Job situation improving

Hi ya'll. I just wanted to update everyone on my job prospects. I had the best interview ever at Pueblo Bone & Joint office. They have called me in for a "working interview" which means they will have me check out the medical software and see how I do. I am going in Tues. Dec. 2, and Thur. Dec. 4 from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Wish me luck. Fortunately the other candidates are not experienced in the medical field, either, so it should be a pretty level playing field. I am really keeping my fingers crossed - say a prayer for me.

I get to babysit Owen tomorrow morning. Josh and Bree have a Dr. appt, and Owen is not feeling well, so I am going to their house. We went to the Library on Sunday and Owen was so sad, he had a slight fever and was not his rambunctious self. He has a sinus infection, so he got some meds and should be fine for Thanksgiving. After that, it will be Turkey shopping. I am really excited to have Ben, Brenda and Amelia come and Shep will be here too. I have two spare bedrooms and a family room with a futon, so everyone can sleep! Josh and Bree are moving rooms around for the new one. Josh has the whole week off for Thanksgiving.

We will miss Becky, Devin, Logan and Laila, but they will be here for Christmas! They will fly to DIA on the 20th and we will head to Bailey on the 23 & 24 for Christmas, then they will drive to Greeley on Christmas Day and return to SLC on the 30th.

Sunday I went to the Methodist Church near the house. I sat by Pat and George and they were the nicest people. They invited me to go to Sunday school after church so I joined the older folks - 70 and up. They were quite a treat. The couple was so friendly. Today my doorbell rang, which is rare and a couple from the church brought me a strawberry rhubarb pie as a welcome! I was really impressed. Needless to say, I will return to the church again. Maybe next time I will go to the younger Sunday School. I have a hard time relating to the fact that I am "older". I think we need a new term for people in their 60's - TWEENOS - It is sometimes hard to figure out if I am part of the over 50 club, or a senior citizen, or something in between.

School district 70 had rejected me as a secretarial sub, and said that they did not need the help, but they sent a letter congratulating me and want me to go to an orientation on December 3, so I guess I will go. Can't hurt, but I hope I never have to find the school locations cuz the district office was out in the sticks (near Blende) if you look on a map east of Pueblo.

Unemployment has not notified me of my status yet. The orientation I went to on Thursday last week was very informative. What a new experience! They sent me a visa card and if I qualify it will have money put on it to spend. Pretty sophisticated, I must say. News today is that although Bush extended unemployment benefits until after the holidays, they will be much tougher on qualifying - that would be me. It is kind of like giving to one who needs, but taking it from another one. Maybe they could have used mortgage bail out money to help people who can't get jobs now partly because of the mortgage crisis we didn't create in the first place. I doubt if a lot of unemployed people own huge homes they can't afford, nor do they spend excessively on their credit cards. Oh, listen to me rant and rave!

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving - I know I have a lot to be thankful for even if things are not going exactly like I had planned. Mostly I am thankful for the wonderful family and my super friends - I miss you all more than you know!

SLC Visit was Great!!

Wow! I went to Salt Lake on Wednesday November 12, and returned Sunday. It was the most incredible trip. It occurred to me on the trip home that I have a really educated family! The three girls, Becky, Bree and Brenda have Masters Degrees, Josh has his Administrative License, comparable to a Masters and Ben has the equivalent of a Masters + in Microsoft Certifications and now Devin has his PHd. At least I have a Bachelors, but it seems so unreal that the kids have achieved so very much, and they are still so young.

I am still having camera problems so photos will follow, but I will give you a low down on the trip.

Devin's defense was absolutely mind boggling. I am sorry to say that I only understood the buts, ifs, ands, and protein. It was so technical it was like a one hour speech in a foreign language. He was so poised and professional it made me proud to have him married to my daughter and to be part of our family. He deserves huge kudos for the five years' work he put into it. The dissertation was an inch thick, and as understandable to me as the defense. It was a privilege to be part of the process!!!!

I got to babysit for Laila and Logan while Becky and Devin enjoyed evenings out. I must say, the kids were perfect for me. It must be the Nana touch. The parents needed some much deserved time to themselves, to say the least. Every minute with them all was a joy. The birthday/celebration party for Devin was outstanding. I think everyone had a great time. The only family members not present from both sides were Bree, Owen and Josh. Bree, of course cannot travel in her very pregnant condition. I think we all had a good time for them. Ben traveled alone with Amelia and Brenda came in Saturday from a conference in Little Rock and joined us. It seemed a supreme effort for everyone to support Devin and well worth it. Amelia and Logan had a great time together.

On the job scene, I got a rejection email from Fountain-Fort Carson School District - boo hoo - it would have meant a 40 minute commute, anyway. I applied again for another job at District 70 today. I have an interview tomorrow at 10:30 at a Doctor's office, and I go for my intro to unemployment meeting on Thursday at 10:00. I got a lot of unemployment information, now I am just waiting for the $. I don't know when I will find out about that. I didn't think I would qualify, but it doesn't hurt to try. It would mean $320 a week if I did get it. Would certainly help with Cobra insurance and house payment. I faxed a resume today for a construction company from an ad in the paper. I have about 5 craig's list jobs to apply for. It seems most of them are pretty sketchy! They want "dynamic" people wanting to work in a fun environment and they will pay $40-$50,000 a year. In Pueblo - oh yeah! I am not sure what the businesses are, but the ads are fun to read. I will apply to Starbucks this week to try and get part time work for now. We have 2 big business here in town cutting back employees from the paper today. Just what I needed. I am keeping my chin up and hoping for the best. Maybe something will happen soon. Cindy's aunt does a lot of volunteering, so I am contacting her this week to find out where I might do something fun. I am thinking the zoo would be neat! I bet I could make a bunch of great contacts with the giraffes and apes - don't you think? Since it is one of my favorite places to go, I think it might be nice to meet people and get out!

While I was gone a building exploded not too far (2 miles?) from my house. I haven't checked it out yet, but it totally destroyed the building and broke windows in neighboring stores, killed one person and injured 12 others. The pictures in the paper were pretty scary. They still don't have a cause yet. It is in the old historic district not too far from the riverwalk.

Well, bye for now - the job search is calling!

Update on job search and whatever from Pueblo

It seems maybe my job angel is looking out for me. It has been pretty discouraging looking for jobs with no feedback. Finally I am getting a little something - and something is better than nothing, for sure. I am testing for the Census Bureau tomorrow at 10:00, the temp service is presenting me for a Dr. office job (I need to find a doctor, anyway), I applied for a job opening today at Fountain-Fort Carson, the district where Josh works (the application took 2 hours and a trip to the Post Office, and $4.80 as well). I have had 3 rejection letters, which makes me feel great, just because someone saw something I sent out - how sad is that! I had a call from my Monster resume to interview (for 15 minutes) for a job in Colorado Springs. I turned that down, partly for the commute to work (45 min), and partly because it sounded pretty fishy. Many posted jobs are marketing companies wanting to pay Administrative Assistants $42-50 grand a year. Yeah, sure! I don't even consider those anymore. I tried to signed up to sub in both school districts for secretaries - we had such a need in Fruita. District 70 said because they have aides, they don't ususally need anyone. District 60 said to check back in January, because they have enough people to keep them busy - so much for my networking there. It took a trip to the Sheriff's office for finger prints which too quite a while, and the schools really don't need me.

I have been passing out resumes and a cover letter in the Thatcher Building - my bank and a bunch of financial and legal offices. I met some very nice people, have given out about 10 resumes, and really got to know the shoeshine guy in the lobby. He is quite a character. I am in there every other day or so, so we have become buddies. He hasn't come up with any hot leads, but he is a friendly face. I'll have to wear some shoes in there that need polishing some day. I can also get a haircut, massage, lunch and clothes in the same building.

Tried the Episcopal Church on Sunday, but found it to be kinda cold and unfriendly-it was All Saints day, so I guess they didn't have any Friend Saints available. I will go somewhere different this Sunday.

On Tuesday, Nov. 11, I am going to Cindy Jobe's in Denver to spend the night, then to the airport on Wed. for SLC to celebrate with Dr. Devin Close - both his PHd defense Friday and his birthday on Saturday. What a treat! I hope he has better luck than I have in finding a position. It is a scarey world out there. I am really excited to see how much Laila and Logan have grown and changed since Becky was here. I will return on Sunday and back to my job of hunting for a job.

Bye for now - just wanted to update everyone!

Enjoying grandbabies and hunting for work

Owen's Halloween costume at the
Pueblo Childrens' Art Museum
Owen at the park

Amelia disguised as a lady bug & really enjoying her cottage cheese!

Amelia walking at her house in Bailey & she and Owen are playing at Nana's house. Make sure you turn up volume, because she is very vocal. Owen had such fun playing with her.
Last weekend with the adults and grandbabies was just great! The boys were off hunting the wily deer (they got 3) and Moms and Nana were enjoying the kiddos. We went to the Pueblo Childrens' Art Museum with costumes and had a great time. Brenda and Bree found a trail by my house that is easily accessible and it goes down to the river. I have yet to try it, but my goal is tomorrow (Thursday) because the weather here is beautiful. Of course Ella (Ben & Brenda's dog) was great, too.
Ben, Josh and Shep went hunting on the Forbes Ranch near Alamosa and shot 3 deer. They left Friday night and came back Sunday about noon. We went over to Josh and Bree's house and butchered the deer and packaged it all, and were done about 6:00 p.m. It was a lot of work but another fun Hobgood Project! The kids really appreciate having the meat, the guys like the bonding time, and I just like all of them whenever I get the chance. Shep and I don't eat venison, so they are welcome to all of it. Check the blog links for Ben's Blog and I am sure he will write about the hunting adventures. The stories are kind of like fish tales!
The weekend before I went to Ben & Brenda's while Ben came to Pueblo to hunt. Brenda & I took Amelia to the Botanic Gardens and it was abosolutely beautiful - I love that growy stuff. Brenda is so nice to put me up whenever I have the whim to visit. Amelia is really getting to know me - I love that! She is quite the character since she started walking as you saw in the video.
I babysat (toddler sat) for Owen last week while Josh and Bree went to a Dr. Appt. and out to eat. He was pretty funny. I got to do my first "craft" project - YEA! I had a miniature pumpkin and he wanted to color it, so I got out all kinds of stuff. When I curled ribbon to put on it for hair, he said the hair was curly like Matt Costa (the singer) who also has curly hair. It cracked me up. What a sense of humor he is developing.
Becky and I visit on the phone most every day. I really miss seeing that family. Logan now sings me songs on the phone. ABC is really good and BINGO is a great second. Sometimes he just breaks into song when he gets the phone. Laila is growing so much -I can't wait to see them. Devin is almost finished with the disertation! They moved to another house which is working out well now that days are shorter - they won't be in the deep dark valley this winter. They have a school nearby to take Logan to play which works out great. He is still a "two" year old, and some of Becky's stories are pretty funny. The other day he went up to a stranger in the park and told him he had something in his shoe. The guy helped him get the rock out of his shoe and visited with him! He is quite engaging - a politician in the works?
I am going to SLC Nov. 12 and returning on Sunday the 16th. Devin's disertation is the 14th and his birthday and Dr. party will be on Sat. the 15th. Pretty exciting for them. Finally life can get back to normal.
Job searching has become a hobby for me, I have decided. I have changed my resume 5 times and recently converted to PDF format. I hope it helps. Today I went to the Thatcher building just a mile from where I live. It is a 7 story historic building with big beautiful offices. I took my cover letter and resumes to every office on the first floor. People were really nice, and most of them took my stuff with the idea of passing it on if they didn't have a position. I had such a nice experience! My goal is to hit all floors before I go to SLC. After that I will pick a new big building in my area. At least it is easy on my feet. I still do the internet thing, but I have only had responses from temp agencies on those. I interviewed for a School District 60 job, but was not selected - oh woe is me! It felt so good to do something besides work on the computer, though. After my trip I will find some volunteer work to do, and see what comes of that. The temp agencies have not been too good yet, but I am holding out hope that something will happen. I am also planning on subbing as a secretary in both school districts. I went in to 60 yesterday, and the gal won't be back til Wed of next week! I called 70 today, and the gal is out til Monday. Hmmmm - drives me crazy! When I visited with the Temp lady, Andrea, who knows me on a first name basis, she said I was not the first person totally frustrated trying to find work. I guess a lot of people are in the same boat I am.
The house is great, still have some projects, but they will have to wait til I get more $. I finally got rid of the dishwasher that we took out of the kitchen a month ago. Three people told me just to set it on the sidewalk with a FREE sign on it, and it would be gone. It sat there for 2 days, and I thought I would have to haul it back to my backyard, but a guy came this morning and took it.
I have little green grasses growing in the backyard. The weather has been so gorgeous, I was lucky since I waited so long to plant it. I also put crocus bulbs in the front yard under the grass (which is called naturalizing), and this spring I should have them sprouting in the grass early in the spring.
Well, no more adventures from me. I miss you all and will keep in touch!

Life is good, even if I am unemployed

Well, I am actively working on job prospects, and have no idea how it is going, except that after a while I believe I must be invisible.
Strangely, I have posted a multitude of cover letters and resumes on line, and emailed a bunch of them, all with no results. I was thrilled, though, to get one rejection letter for a federal job. At least someone looked at my stuff! I will find out the results of the Colorado State Testing I did two weeks ago - the job I had applied for was not available, but I still tested. I will get a number of correct out of possible answers. The test is good for one year, and can be used for other state jobs I will apply for in the future. I have a contact from Larry & Joanna Feather for Loaf 'n Jug stores, but have not had returned calls yet. I am going to do cold calls this next week, and take my unsolicited resumes to anyone who will take them. I am getting brave in my old age - in fact, my age is probably a factor. After 3 or 4 revisions of my resume, I think it looks less like I am 61!

I tried to go to church this morning, but the yellow pages were wrong. Instead of the 9:00 service, the next one doesn't start til 10:30, so I have time to work on this blog. Maybe I can meet someone at church. I feel like the "lone ranger".

Sherry visited this week, and we had fun with her dog Hank and I enjoyed showing her around Pueblo. She was impressed, like everyone, with the community resources we have here. We did the riverwalk, the zoo, and Pueblo Reservoir (the lake). We had a great time. She drove over with plants I had left in GJ at school. I think she looked like a traveling greenhouse. I love having the plants-although they are more like bushes in the house.

This coming weekend I am going to see Brenda and Amelia while the guys go hunting. I am looking forward to a trip to Bailey just to get out of town. Amelia is walking - so it should be tons of fun playing with her. Ben's business is taking hits from the economic downturn, but Brenda's non profit employer just hired a new director, so she won't be in a crunch like she has been. They are busy working on things at the house, and enjoying that baby. She is showing the more stubborn side of her personality now that she can walk. The stories are pretty funny - I hope to get a video to post soon.

Becky, Devin, Laila and Logan moved to a different house and will stay there until Devin gets a post-doc job. They are happy to be out of the dark canyon for the winter. Logan is a typical two year old, so he is giving his parents a run for their money. He sings me songs on the phone. The other day it was the ABC song until he got to P and then it was Ps Porridge Hot from then on - pretty cute. Laila is just as happy as ever. Devin's dissertation is coming along well, and I can't even imagine the stress. November 14 is the big day - his birthday is the 15th, so it will be a sweet celebration! Becky is updating me daily on all the activities in their family. I enjoy our phone visits, because it feels like I am in touch, and closer in distance. Being so far aways is not the best of situations.

Josh, Bree, Owen, and the one in the cooker are doing great. Bree is looking very pregnant, it is so cute! She keeps really busy with all of Owen's activities, her yoga and on-line tutoring. Owen has grown into a little boy - even the way he walks is not like a toddler anymore. When he comes over, he knows where all the toys are. It is so nice to have him so comfortable here. He is such a joy. Josh's job requires quite a few late days, but it is worth it. Their lives are pretty busy and they really cherish a weekend with nothing to do.

The house is pretty much finished now, except for little stuff and eventually the kitchen when I win the lottery or get a great paying job. The last room I did was the convereted garage. I used carpet tiles and did my own peel and stick tiles, too. The paint made a huge difference. I used 3 tubes of caulk before I painted just filling cracks and holes. I had to repair a drop down attic access door - that was fun! The previous owners even had a dart board up-and weren't very good dart players considering the numerous holes in the wall. It took plenty of spackle to fill that. I also covered 3 holes in walls created by plumber, and just left by the previous homeowners. The patches turned out okay, but I am not hiring myself out for drywall repair any day soon. At least that messy job is done. I have much left to do, but the big projects are done.

Mid September and still goin' strong

Ben, Brenda and Amelia visited last weekend and we had some work and some play. The weather was cool on Saturday so Ben and I worked on the dishwasher to get it installed. As usual, it took trips to the True Value for parts and troubleshooting. We got it in, but I had to have a repairman come Tuesday to put in a part we couldn't find. All is well now. Amelia is just a load of fun-crawling around, jabbering a lot, and giving lots of hugs (I really like those!)

Sunday we went on a hike at Pueblo Reservoir on a trail I had not been on yet. It was a nice day and Owen is quite the hiker. We split up on the trails when Owen stopped for a snack and ended up hiking in a different directions and did not meet back up until we had circled around on the trail. Hobgoods are noted for vague directions but ending up where they should be in the end. It was pretty funny, we had a great hike and Amelia got her morning nap.

Job prospects are at least showing some action. I have tested at a Temp agency and they have a couple of leads. One is with Pueblo Community College - 1 block away - it is a 520 hour position, approximately 3 months. After that time, I would be back in the pool of candidates testing for the job through Colorado State - at least it would be something for now, however. I did great on Word and Excel tests but windows was not so great, so I went back to do tutorials and re-tested and did much better. Friday I go to the community college for the State testing for previous job applications (2 hours!). I expect as many as 80 people to test, based on resume qualifications. The top three test scores will determine who interviews. I am hoping for a real turnaround in my testing capabilities. I have been known to over-analyze test questions and perform more at a B level. I think I would need more than that to get the top 3. I am eternally hopeful, though, cuz you never know. I have heard no more on local job applications, but I will followup by emails today. Craigs list has had some jobs I have applied for, too. I was pleasantly surprised. I also listed the washer and dryer on the list and sold them for cash in 12 hours, and had 5 responses. It is fun to sell stuff there! They also hauled them away, which was great.

Amelia is just so cute!
Here is a video of her playing and dancing

Laila - another happy baby

Sep 10, 2008

September 10 in Pueblo

Becky and Laila visited this weekend and we had a great time. I missed seeing Devin and Logan, but the girls' weekend was fun. Laila has changed so much. I was having camera problems but here are pictures of her. She did great on the flight and car ride. What a delightful baby!
She is going to have quite a head of blonde hair. Most of the pictures I took have her eyes opened like she is scared because my flash takes so long like the one in pink.
Josh, Bree, Owen, Becky and Laila and I went to the river walk one morning and had a great time. Here is Owen sitting on a beaver statue at the river walk. He has become quite the little boy, not so much a toddler any more. He just loved Laila and was so good with her. Mostly he asked "what's Laila saying? (or doing?) It was pretty cute.

Becky and Josh are sitting on a wall at the riverwalk and enjoying the beautiful weather. What great siblings they are!

This is a view of the end of the riverwalk right before it goes back to the naturalized state. It is so nice with kids because the paths are easy for them. Sometimes Owen takes his tricycle on the path. It is really a nice safe place to go.

Job searching is going well. Tomorrow I am going to the temp agencies and try that out. No offers yet, but I have mailed 6 resumes locally, so it is better than the internet.
Ben, Brenda, Amelia and Ella are coming this Friday to bring me the dishwasher and futon. I am looking forward to the visit and will post some pictures! I am getting a little better at this stuff.
I miss all of you and hope to have a visit from any of you real soon.

August in Pueblo

It is August and I don't know where the month has gone. I have been really busy with plumbers, electricians, furnace people, and a handyman. Wow, I now have had two days with no people coming and going. Most days are spent with 4 hours on internet applications - ugh - and the other hours trying to clean this place up. I have made a lot of progress.

Terry White visited this weekend - my first company-and I cooked my first decent real meal. Finally, I got the refrigerator stocked to some degree. I have the basics, but it is amazing how much had to be left behind.

The Colorado State Fair started, and Terry and I lasted from 10:00-1:00 - then home to cool off. Saturday was cooler and we had a great time. I drive by the fair grounds all the time, but I had no idea how HUGE it is. What a fun experience. We saw lots of interesting things. I got some ideas on Xera scaping for whenever I get to tackle the back yard. Terry's visit was great, and I think I probably talked waaaay too much. It gets pretty lonely only having phone visits. Terry gave me a much needed break. I could quit working on the house and have fun. We played tourist and I showed him the Zoo, Pueblo Reservoir (which is huge!), the beautiful old homes (there are a lot of them), the steel mill, the river walk which is huge and just gorgeour. We had a slopper at Gray's Tavern which has been here since 1934. A slopper is a Pueblo invention - half a hamburger bun, two beef patties, cheese, topped with chili (green or red) and fries on top if you want. The chili is not thick, so it is sloppy, hence the name. Anyone who has spent time here knows what a slopper is, and people from Colorado Springs come here to eat!

I babysat for Owen on Thursday, and he likes Nana's house. He was a bunch of fun and seemed very relaxed and likes to play with my odd assortment of yardsale toys. We had a great time together - this is why I like being here and also closer to Ben, Brenda and Amelia. Becky and Devin will land somewhere by late winter or early spring. No matter where they go, at least I am two hours from a flight out for a visit. This was a good move.

Job prospects are all up to the "Gods of the internet". It is so strange to send stuff off and wonder if anyone ever looks at it, or for that matter, if it went anywhere. I have only had real contact with one person at Pueblo Community College - a block from my house. I was thrilled that I got to drop off a real resume and application. Weird! I have finally re-typed the resume to upload better. It has saved time in the long run. This week I am contacting my Realtor and a friend the Feathers know from here. Maybe real people can help out, cuz I don't know what cyberspace will bring.

This is August 27 and my furnace is going in! I opted for new ducting because it was pretty nasty after 60 years! This should be the last of people in and out. I had coffee with Marge my 80 year old neighbor. She is a retired principal, and we enjoyed the visit and I found out alot about the neighbors. The worst case is an internet predator who is currently in prison. His house is being cleaned out by his sister and they will be selling it, most likely. Just your typical neighbors ha ha! Seems like that stuff is all to common anymore. The rest of the neighbors seem to be really nice.

Becky will be visiting for Josh's birthday, and mine. She will be here Sept. 5. Only Laila gets to fly with her. She was a little hesitant to bring Logan. He would have a super time on the plane talking to everyone, but I don't think that would be much fun for Becky. I am really anxious for her to visit. The house is quite functional right now, so I can enjoy some down time!

Ben and Brenda are headed to Montana for one of Brenda's projects for work at the Continental Divide Initiative. They will head back through Salt Lake City and see Becky and Devin. All are looking forward to that visit. Ben is not as busy with work now. Amelia is just as cute as ever and is saying a lot more words - Ella, Mommy, Daddy, ball, up and several more. I can't wait to see them again. Ben called the other night and said some neighbors had left their house and it was in foreclosure. The neighbors were told they could go into the house and remove anything they wanted, so Ben got permission to do just that. He even got me a dishwasher to replace the one I have (I think mine smells funny and can't get rid of the odor) and a futon frame for my family room area. He said it was pretty strange to go into somneone's house and just take stuff. They got tools, baby clothes and much more. Isn't that just strange! The worst part was the smell, though, because the fridge had not been cleaned out - yuk!

Josh is really busy with his new Assistant Principal job at Fountain Middle School. He really likes it, but it has meant a lot of extra hours. It will settle down here since the kids have been in school for a few weeks. He is really happy with his choice. He was selected from 60 candidates, so it shows what a great employee he is (must be his upbringing)! Bree is feeling a lot better. Her due date is January 27 and they are not going to find out the sex of the baby - that should be fun. We are all so grateful that all is going well and excited for another addition to the family. She has had quite a struggle with huge hormone doses - what a brave girl! Owen is so darned cute and really keeps Bree busy. They go to swim classes, cooking classes, and nature babies in Beulah.

I have had computer problems, and I will try to get pictures on here soon.

July in Linda's Life

Life in Pueblo is just great. This weekend I went to Bailey for Amelia's first birthday. I rode up with Josh, Bree and Owen. We had a super time. If you look at the blog for the family you can see her pictures (in a couple of days) the whole family can be seen on http://www.hobgoods.blogspot.com/. She is quite the talker, and Owen just loves her and played with her the whole time. He even shared his favorite water bottle with her - and if you had a toddler, you would know that is HUGE.
Pictures are attached of the kids and updates on the house. I am still working on this, so check it often cuz it will change.
Job searching is a whole new ball of wax. It is internet driven and as far as I am concerned, it just goes into "Na Na" land and who knows if anyone checks the resumes or the applications. Pretty wierd. This week I am hitting the streets like the old way - I will see how it goes. I am still having difficulty not networking - don't know anyone to network with! I know it will come together.
The house is a perpetual work in progress. I love it and always like projects - I will be doing projects here for a long, long time.
Pueblo is soooooo friendly. Even the deli counter lady at Safeway had a long discussion with me one day. It is so refreshing to run across so many people who are unhurried, happy with their jobs, and willing to spend a minute to be friendly. I did not realize how negative GJ had become. The stress here is so much less! People don't drive too fast, honk too much, or bother to clean up stuff too much. It is funny how a laid-back environment rubs off. The down side to that is the seeming lack of interest in following up with phone calls. Contractors I have tried to get in touch with to do work sometimes don't show up - so I end up taking the one who shows and can get the work done. Prices are pretty reasonable, too.
I really miss social contact - I only talk to people on the phone. I loved visiting SLC and Bailey recently. I probably talked way too much. I hope to get a job and meet some people pretty soon.
Ben, Brenda, Josh and Amelia visited a couple of weeks ago to help me - boy did I need it. Owen and Bree were out of town - lucky for them! I worked them hard, and they accomplished in two days what would have taken me months!
Amelia has fun at Nana's new house, while
Ben & Brenda work! Look at this video - she
is quite the dancer.

Happy Laila for Nana 's visit.

Settled in Pueblo

Time is flying and I am having fun. Here are before and after photos of the house. Between projects, job search, and waiting for contractors, the days have flown by to say the least. I am unpacked, cleaned up and open for business for any visitors.

Job prospects are not exactly gang busters, but I know I will find something. My last paycheck is Aug. 18, so I am getting more anxious. Internet job applications are really time consuming. I am spending about 4-5 hours a day. I am getting pretty good at it.

Going to Bailey for Amelia's first birthday this weekend. Been to Salt Lake to see the littlest one - had a great time with Logan and Laila - and of course Becky and Devin. I get to see Owen about once a week - he recognizes me instantly, which is really neat.

Ben, Josh, and Brenda helped me a couple of weekends ago - What a huge help. I wonder if I got in over my head!

I miss all of you in GJ - please email me and stay in touch

The house is almost mine

Closing on the house is Tuesday. I am getting my furnace replaced and plumbing fixed. Got pretty good bids, now I am making all of the arrangements to get the work done. I plan to move in the 19-21 sometime. Still trying to figure out the moving part.

I had to drive to Colo. Springs to the bank to do a wire transfer for my downpayment. It was life in the big city, cuz a truck had an accident and I sat in traffice for an hour on I-25 near Fountain. The transfer took all of 10 minutes, but the trip took three hours. "Welcome to the big city"!!

Life is good, and I am itching to get my hands dirty!

If you want to see all of the Hobgood Clan, go to www.hobgoods.blogspot.com and you can see all of the grandbabies. There are some pretty fun pictures there!

I had the strangest thing happen the other day. I was reading the Pueblo Chieftain and there was an article about saying kind things. As I read it, I realized it was a friend from high school talking about our 5th grade class. What an irony! I haven't called him yet - I didn't even know he lived in Pueblo. It was a pretty good feeling!

Job prospects are on the back burner til I move in. I am still trying to figure out what will work, but now I am in the thick of the move. Will get onto it later.

Love to all of you who care enough to read this!!!!

Linda Update

It is me again. I am almost no longer homeless, but still unemployed!

I am in Bailey visiting Ben, Brenda, Amelia and Ella and returning to Pueblo Sunday. We are having a super time. Amelia is just the cutest little thing! What a personality (check out the video). She is crawling and trying to pull up. I don't think it will be long before she walks. Tonight I am babysitting to give Ben and Brenda a date night - I am getting good at putting the kiddos to sleep! Ben is working hard on a new project they are launching on Tuesday. Brenda is working a couple of days a week and has had a change in leadership which is a good thing! They are really busy people.

Owen is quite a crack up! We got along great when I babysat for him. He sings a song by Matt Costa - "Sunshine". I have a video of it for you to see. He knows every word to the song. He talks in syllables and it is so cute, but you have to listen really carefully. Josh is the principal for summer school in Fountain and he also accepted a position as Assistant Principal at Fountain Middle School beginning in July. I helped him clean out his classroom on Thursday. Bree is tutoring on line and really seems to like it. She is able to arrange times around Owen's schedule, which is nice. They are busy doing cooking classes at the Y, and many other activities.

Check out the Logan & Laila videos. I miss them already, but plan to fly out the end of July for a few days. Logan and I really became good buddies before I moved and we had a lot of fun playing in his "forest" in the yard and figuring out how dump trucks and trash trucks work. Laila is a really good baby, very easy to take places - such a joy for Becky & Devin. She is so strong, she is turning her head and pushing away with her arms. Logan loves "baby sister". The transition has been pretty easy. Becky's biggest problem is the two dogs. Devin is working hard being a dad and finishing his dissertation-I don't know how he does it all.

The job search is going slowly, but I am plugging along. I have applied for one school job in District 70 in Pueblo and one federal job also in Pueblo. Cindy has an uncle who knows everyone in Pueblo - he has taken my resume and I think maybe he can be of help. It is hard to Network when you don't know anyone. The Internet is awesome for job searching - Monster has not had too much yet, though.

I had an inspection on the house so we are probably going to ask for the owners to give an allowance for a new furnace and some plumbing. The rest I can take care of myself. My new creation will include a zen backyard with a clothesline and a children's play area, a raised flower and veggie garden probably for next year. I may build a carport, but that will be in the future.
Life with Cindy and her mom (Madelyn) is working out fine for all of us. I am so grateful to have a place to stay. I am getting pretty good at "couch surfing" as Josh puts it.

I miss the people I left behind in Grand Junction and Fruita, but I am really glad to be here, too.

Take care
Love
Linda

Linda Hobgood

June 23 - I am at the library using my daily one hour of computer time. Job searches are going well, with a few resumes out there. I have started a monster search, but nothing yet.

I babysat for Josh and Bree twice already. Owen is so much fun. I am going to try to get a video to post here so you can see him.

This is the house I am buying in Pueblo on July 16. It is located at 907 Security Avenue. The front yard has new landscaping and the back yard is a makie do.

My bedroom! It faces the street and has the cool corner windows. There are storm windows throughout, but they will be a bear to wash, and you know me, I love to do windows!

The living room has crowned ? ceilings and plaster walls, built in the 40s. The floors are hardwood, and I plan to refinish them and remove carpet before moving in.

The dining area is right off of the living room. No room to sit in the kitchen.

The kitchen is not designed for a gourmet cook, but with a multitude of repairs and re-arrangement it should work great for my limited culinary endeavors.

My favorite room in the house is the bathroom. It is 40s pink ceramic tile from floor to ceiling. It is one of the best ceramic tile jobs I have ever seen. My dad, who installed ceramic, would be proud. Needless to say, the color will stay!

This is a spare room/bedroom/office with cool wood walls. It was an add on. There is a bathroom off of this room that is not pink, but needs a decorator's touch.

This is the guest room. All bedrooms have huge closets. Instead of walk-in closets they are more like squeeze in, but plenty of storage.
